The Best Candidates Want a Mentor, not Just a Manager

Your next great hire probably wants more than a paycheck and access to the office’s allegedly “premium” coffee.
They want to grow. Solve interesting problems. Learn from someone whose thinking they respect.
As a CEO, you might be exactly that person. But a job posting rarely gives candidates much insight into how you lead.
“Fast-paced environment” leaves a little room for interpretation.
A book lets you show what the posting cannot: how you make decisions, what you learned from mistakes, and why you approach your business the way you do.
For the right reader, those pages can spark a thought:
“I’d like to learn from this person.”
That gives candidates a meaningful reason to seek you out. It also gives you something richer to discuss in an interview than where they see themselves in five years.
So if you’re considering writing a book, think beyond prospective customers.
Your future employees could be reading, too.
Give them a preview of the leader they’d get to learn from. The coffee can remain a pleasant surprise.
